The Puzzled Players utilize many Improv Games
made popular by Viola Spolin. They are situations that often start with the "Who, Where and What" being submitted to the actors
by the audience. The
Improv Actors then make up the scene in full view of the audience. (You've seen them on WHO'S LINE IS IT ANYWAY?
) The job of the actor is to stay in the "Here and Now", agree with the action and then react honestly while building the
scene. Improv does not have to be funny but often is with The Puzzled Players. You will also notice that there are no props
used with the exception of some simple chairs. The "Where" or the environment will be described through the actors' actions
on stage.
Del Close originated "The Harold"
which is an extended improv scene. Sometimes The Puzzled Players perform a "Harold" if the show allows. (Some movies are full
of improv scenes and some television shows utilize improvisation. Have you seen the BONNIE HUNT SHOW which stars Bonnie Hunt
a former member of Second City?) The players also perform sketches
that originate from improv performances. They are refined and rehearsed before presentations. (Have you seen SATURDAY
NIGHT LIVE?)The audience will be notified when the shows contain rehearsed sketches as the norm is to create the scene
as it happens in front of the live audience.
You may have a favorite actor, but the strength of The Puzzled Players is their ability to work as a group with real
cooperation. This is important because one of the goals of the actor is to think of the group rather than him or herself.
Another is to give up any preconceived ideas as to what the scene will be about and to go with the ideas being generated on
the stage. This is an ensemble in the truest form.
